Welcome to the Teacher Education Literacy Camp/Campamento de lectura, at the University of Texas at El Paso! This is a literacy camp for children school years to help students develop their literacy in English or Spanish. University Students in Teacher Education provide one on one tutoring to students from the entire El Paso area districts.

The focus is on reading! Each semester approximately 150 university students enrolled in coursework in reading development come together with approximately 150 public school students to engage in literacy activities. University students are assigned to a child for the duration of the semester and work with them, one on one. Quality literature and content based reading materials and manipulatives are used as children engage in many hands on and oral language activities that facilitate reading development in Spanish and in English.

In addition, while public school students are in their tutoring sessions, parents can participate in Adult English as a Second Language classes in another classroom. Parents also learn how to support their child's reading development and also receive information on the many reading programs available to them in the various schools in the El Paso School Districts. It is a Win ~ Win situation! At the same time that University tutors provide a service for the community, they too benefit from the opportunities to work, one on one with children in the critical areas of reading.

There is no cost for this camp; however, it is based on a first come/first served system. If you are interested, please complete the application on this page. For more information, or if you have any question, please send us an email in the CONTACT US box on the home page. We will respond as soon as possible. Thank you for your interest, and for supporting your child's literacy development. Reading is fundamental to the success of every child!
